Speed-up program downloads

Focus Resources on the Target Download

There are a couple ways to go about increasing your download speed. You can make some change to your computer that will allow the PC to devote more of its energy to downloading, increasing program download speeds. One good tip is to limit the number of applications you run while downloading. Depending on your computer’s CPU power and RAM capabilities, this could make a big difference. By closing programs that aren’t related to the download you can assign more speed and power to the download.

Programs that run on the background of your computer are also taxing your resources and slowing your download speed. There are programs that are pre-set to launch automatically when you boot your computer up that you might not even know are running, this is especially true if your computer came with pre-installed software.

Managing Running Processes and Startup Programs

You can manage your Startup list and disable program by following these steps:

·       Click Start, then Control Panel

·       Choose Programs and then Change Startup Programs

·       This will open Windows Defender

·       Enter your administrative password, then click Show For All Users

·       Scroll through the list and disable the programs you want – be careful not to delete listings if you don’t know what they are. Don’t disable any listings for:

o   Window Explorer

o   Windows Defender

Optimize Internet Connection Settings

Another angle is to check out your Internet connection abilities. If you are using a dial up connection, your download speeds will be a lot slower than a DSL broadband connection. If you are downloading a lot, you might want to consider talking to your Internet Service Provider (ISP) and asking about the different services and speeds they offer.

If you want to test your computer and find out your download capabilities, there are a number of online speed tests available. If you want to make some adjustments on your computer’s end, there is a registry tweak that you can perform. However, you should be very careful when tampering with the registry, as mistakes can be fatal. You should create a backup of your registry for safety before you continue. Once you perform the speed test, you can follow the tips offered to adjust your registry.

Check Firewall Constraints

Another place to check is the Firewall, and make sure that you are set to allow downloads. On Windows Vista you can easily access the Firewall settings and include the website you want to download from to your safe list.

·       Click Start, then Control Panel

·       Choose Security, then Security Center

·       In the Security Center box than opens, choose Firewall on the left side

·       Select Change Settings

·       If prompted, enter your administrative password or press Enter

·       Choose the Exceptions tab

·       Now you will see all the programs that are allowed through your firewall security

Click Add Program, then either click to select the program from a list, or use the Browse feature to look for the program on your computer, then OK
