What are Quarantined Files?
In an attempt to rid the computer of infections,
anti-spyware/anti-virus applications often place a file in quarantine.
What exactly does this mean and what should you do with these files?
Quarantined files are created by anti-spyware/anti-virus applications
when they scan the computer for malware infections. These applications
search for undesirable applications such as adware, spyware, and
viruses. Once they discover these infections, the anti-spyware/anti-virus
applications attempt to remove them. In some cases, the computer’s files
cannot be completely cleaned of the infection and the files are
quarantined.
Quarantined files are set aside and removed from the daily functioning
processes of a computer. They are encrypted so that they cannot be
accessed or pose any threat to the computer’s system. It’s as though
these files are in limbo or suspended in time since they cannot be
activated, viewed, or used in any manner.
Quarantined files can remain on a computer forever or they can be
deleted from the computer. Most anti-spyware/anti-virus applications
provide a prompt that asks the computer user if they wish to delete the
quarantined files. In general, it is perfectly safe to do so since the
files are usually not needed for the day-to-day functioning of the
computer.
The best rule-of-thumb to use when deciding whether or not to delete the
quarantined files on your computer is to gauge the functioning of the
computer since the files have been quarantined. If you aren’t
experiencing any problems with performance, then it is a safe bet that
these quarantined files can safely be deleted without expectation of any
undesirable ramifications.
Quarantined files are permanently deleted from the hard drive once you
choose to remove them. If you accidentally delete a system file that you
later discover to be necessary, you can simply download a clean file
from the installation CD for your computer. If you prefer, you can allow
quarantined files to remain on your computer if you are unsure what to
do with them. However, quarantined files are generally unnecessary files
that you can safely delete.
The latest Malware variants now include
replicating viruses.
Replication occurs each time a computer boots up and each time removal
is attempted. Sophisticated Antivirus and Antispyware solutions are
required in order to deal with this evolving and persistent type of
threat.
