Make Windows load faster

If Windows is getting sluggish and your operating system boot time seems to be slowing down, there are some things that you can do to clean up your system and get Windows back to its optimal performance.

Windows Defrag

Windows operating systems are equipped with a tool to defragment the hard drive. Over time, bits of data – downloads, old applications, temporary files and incomplete uninstalls – can accumulate on your hard drive and create a mess of information that the system needs to sort through to boot up and perform other operations.

Cleaning out this data will improve performance.

  • Click the Start button, then choose All Programs
  • Select Accessories and then System Tools
  • Choose Disk Defragmenter
  • Enter your administrative code if you are asked for it, or press Enter
  • Choose Defragment Now
  • The process can take a few minutes to run through your entire system, so be patient and let the program work – you can still use your system for other purposes while its running
  • Restart your system when complete

Windows Built-in Disk Cleanup Tool

Disk Cleanup is another handy Windows utility that you can use to get rid of garbage on your hard disk and improve processing times.

  • Click Start, then All Programs
  • Select Accessories, then System Tools
  • Choose Disk Cleanup – the Options screen will open – choose to clean just your user account or the entire computer
  • Type your administrative password if asked, or press Enter
  • If prompted to choose a drive to clean, select the hard drive C:, then OK
  • Choose the Cleanup tab
  • Select the boxes to delete files
  • When you have finished your selection, click OK, then Delete Files
  • Let the process run until complete then restart your computer

Clean-out the Windows Freeware

If you have noticed slow Windows boot times from the beginning, it may be the case that your pre-installed computer was loaded up with a lot of freeware programs that are all set to run at start up.

A lot of the time these programs run in the background and users don’t even know they’re there. This taxes your computer and makes it work harder, slowing down boot up and processing times. When computers are pre-installed with Windows, a lot of the time manufacturers use this opportunity to put new and sample versions of other programs on as well.

Taking these programs off your system can increase boot speed.

  • Click Start, then type msconfig in the search bar and Enter
  • Vista will open then System Configuration page
  • Choose the Startup tab to view the programs set to launch when you boot up
  • Click to remove the check from the listings that you want to remove
  • Choose the General tab and select Selective Startup – now the computer will only open the checked programs at startup
  • Click OK, then Restart
