How to Speedup Torrent Downloads Speed

Torrents are small files that contain the information necessary to download the file – most often used for downloading temporarily popular files such as new music, movies and games, where the more people download the torrent, the faster the downloads become. You need a torrent client to download these – there are many free apps available online.  If you feel that your torrents could download faster, try some of these tips and tricks to speed them up.

Check Your Speed

Before you get too frustrated with your download speed, check the maximum upload and download speeds that are allowed by your ISP. Your download speed won’t exceed the cap that the ISP sets.

Disable Windows Firewall

Windows comes with a default firewall built in – many users feel that it is faster to disable this firewall and use a different third party firewall.  To disable Windows firewall:

  1. Go to Start and choose Run. In the dialog box, type in Firewall.cpl and then choose Ok.
  2. Find the General tab.
  3. Choose Off. Click OK.

Make sure you download another firewall, otherwise your system won’t be protected.

Cap Max Speed

Once you know what your maximum speed it, set the max upload speed to 80%. If you max out your speed, the downloads will slow as there is no room left for the files you are downloading.  You should be able to change the maximum speed in the client preferences.

Change Default Port

If the client allows it, it may help increase the speed if you change the default port. For example, BitTorrent is the most popular client for downloads and uses port 6881-6999 by default. ISPs often limit the connections on these ports, knowing they are going to be heavily trafficked. Change the ports to any other range – if you are behind a router, be sure to have them UPnP enabled or have the ports forwarded.

Check Seeds and Peers

It may seem obvious, but try to find torrents with the best seed to peer ratio. The more seeds the better, but ratio is more important.

Connected Peers per Torrent

Again, maxing out this setting can actually hurt your download speeds. Several torrent experts advise setting this level to the upload speed X 1.3. For example, if your stated maximum upload speed is 30KB/S, then the amount you want to set for connected peers per torrent is 39.

Optimize Your Internet

Optimizing your Internet connection can help with so many things, including Torrent downloads. There are many Internet optimizers that you can find online and we’re not going to recommend any by name. You can easily find reviews by program that can help you decide which one is right for you.

This is by no means an exhaustive list of torrent tweaks – a quick search online will yield patches and downloads that are said to increase the download speed for many of the most popular clients. Just make sure that anything you do is legal and won’t cause you problems down the road.
