Adware.Sidebar Potential Spyware
The Adware.Sidebar software
downloads advertisements into the user’s computer
The Adware.Sidebar application attempts to mimic the behavior of a
Browser Helper Object (BHO) to avoid suspicion. BHO programs are add-ons
to Web browsers that perform specific functions. Some may be in the form
of search bars or may add icons to certain websites on the browser
interface.
Although the Adware.Sidebar program poses as a toolbar in Web browsers,
users report that it changes certain browser settings. It can alter the
home page. It displays pop-ups and adverts regardless of what pages the
user views. The advertisements appear even when the user is not
connected to the Internet. The user is sometimes redirected to a
different address. The constant appearance of pop-ups sometimes slows
computer performance.
The Adware.Sidebar application downloads files into the victim’s
computer. These files may be malware or attached with malware that can
cause harm to the system. The Adware.Sidebar software can also download
updates of itself.
Aggressive advertisers typically plant adware to a person’s computer.
This allows them to advertise to a large number of people anytime,
anywhere. In some cases, third party advertisers will plant software
that can gather information regarding the user. They use the information
to package their advertisements appropriately. They subsequently post
their advertisements back to the user’s computer or spam his e-mail.
The Adware.Sidebar application modifies the host file of the Web browser
to direct the user to the following sites:
• www.txwm1204.com;
• and pr.749571.com.
The Adware.Sidebar application also creates the following files:
• spoolsvv.exe;
• somaticCAB.exe;
• \7d63a480.exe;
• \mgeekremove.exe;
• \reg2.exe;
• \de8352aa.exe;
• \barbho.dll;
• and \mygeek.dll.
These files are hidden in Windows systems folders to fool the user into
thinking they are safe. Some allow the Adware.Sidebar software to
transmit unsolicited files to the victim’s computer. Others store
different components of the Adware.Sidebar application. In instances
when the user is able to locate some executable files related to the
Adware.Sidebar software and delete them, these carefully concealed files
are able to re-install the Adware.Sidebar software application to the
user’s computer.
